Lowe pledges to the Illini

Illinois landed a big in-state target on Sunday with a pledge from 3-star offensive lineman Vederian Lowe from Rockford (Ill.) Auburn.

Lowe committed to Lovie Smith and the Fighting Illini following another strong performance at an Illinois camp.

After being recruited by the Illini since his sophomore season in high school, Lowe has built a good relationship with new offensive line coach Luke Butkus. He had the opportunity to be coached by Butkus at the camp.

"I really like Illinois and I feel like it would be a a great fit for me," Lowe told EdgyTim.com. "The coaching staff is great and I loved working with Coach Butkus."

Lowe solidified his Illinois offer by being one of the top performers at an Illini camp in Barrington. He was in Champaign for a big man camp on Sunday.

By the end of the day, Lowe was ready to close out his recruitment.

"I just felt it was time," Lowe said. "Coach Smith said that he really liked me and it just felt like the right thing to do. It feels good to have made the commitment."

Illinois is getting a massive offensive guard prospect in Lowe, who currently checks in at 6-foot-5, 337-pounds. He has trimmed down over the last few months and shows improved quickness and more tenacity.

Lowe joins in-state recruits Ricky Smalling, Cameron Thomas, and Kendall Smith in the Illini's class of 2017. Illinois also holds a commitment from Florida running back Mike Epstein.
